Ruthenium Dioxide (Ruthenium(IV) Oxide)
Ruthenium dioxide, also known as ruthenium(IV) oxide (RuO2), is a black metallic powder. It is insoluble in acids but can dissolve in molten alkalis to form Na2RuO4.
Ruthenium dioxide possesses extremely high specific capacitance, excellent conductivity, a relatively wide potential window, and high reversibility in redox reactions. It is primarily used as a chemical catalyst, such as in photocatalytic degradation of toxic substances in wastewater, as an electrodeposition catalyst for aluminum to enhance deposition rate and reduce deposition potential, and to promote hydrogenation/dehydrogenation/dehydration reactions for aromatic and aliphatic organic compounds. Additionally, ruthenium dioxide is employed in the fabrication of resistors, capacitors, fuel cells, and as a conductive phase in thick film resistor pastes. It finds widespread applications in various fields including traditional industries, new energy vehicles, aerospace, and more.
Ruthenium dioxide exists in two polymorphs: one is amorphous, and the other is a rutile-type structure with a tetragonal crystal system. Both polymorphs exhibit electrical conductivity. When ruthenium dioxide is used to prepare resistor pastes, it is typically sintered at 850°C. At this point, the amorphous RuO2 undergoes crystallization into the rutile-type structure, known as the rutile phase. This phase offers good stability, insensitivity to subsequent resistor processing steps, high power load density, low temperature coefficient of resistance, and low noise level. As a result, it becomes a highly reliable and stable resistor material.
