Tantalum powder is mainly used to manufacture solid electrolytic capacitors with high reliability. In terms of material classification, tantalum powder specially used for capacitors is called capacitor grade tantalum powder. Tantalum powder can be divided into high-voltage tantalum powder (working voltage above 35v) and medium-low voltage high specific volume tantalum powder (working voltage below 25v) according to its voltage. When the button metal powder is used as the anode material of the electrolytic capacitor, the finer the powder, the larger the specific surface area and the higher the specific volume.

The chemical composition and physical structure of tantalum powder affect the performance of the final tantalum electrolytic capacitor, including leakage current, ESR and reliability. Currently, a challenge is to produce tantalum powders with high specific volume, high refractoriness and pressure resistance. Most of the tantalum powder in mass production is obtained by the chemical reaction of potassium fluorotantalate and sodium in a reactor. The tantalum powder obtained by this method is a porous aggregate with high specific surface area, composed of many fine primary particles, with complex structure and large specific surface area. The above-mentioned tantalum powder has a high specific volume due to its large specific surface area. However, its corresponding breakdown voltage is relatively low, and its withstand voltage and reliability are poor. Such tantalum powder is difficult to work under high voltage. In order to obtain tantalum powder with high reliability and high pressure resistance, it is necessary to change the structure and morphology of primary particles to obtain simple tantalum powder.
